Dog Training Advice - How to Train a Dog and Deal with Dog Behavior Problems

Dog Training - this book is for new dog owners or dog owners who are having dog behavior problems - train your dog to sit, come, obey commands, not be aggressive, not mark a house, how to start potty training, teach your dog not run away etc. A comprehensive list of points and chapters so you can learn to train your dog effectively.

My aunt is getting a new dog and I think this book will help her. She can use tips on talking to her dog in the right tone, because I know as a mom she had trouble with rules.

As a pedestrian, I am happy there are chapters on dogs chasing people, reducing barking and controlling aggressive behavior. The section on dealing with chewing will be helpful since she has some items in the living room that she really values. how to train a stubborn dog

Other topics Elizabeth covered are potty training, dog anxiety, keeping the dog out of the trash and other important areas. This guide should help any new dog owner take the right steps.

101 Dog Tricks: Step by Step Activities to Engage, Challenge, and Bond with Your Dog

101 Dog Tricks is the largest trick book on the market and the only one presenting full-color photos of each trick and its training steps. The step-by-step approach, difficulty rating, and prerequisites, allow readers to start training immediately. Tips and trouble-shooting boxes cover common problems, while "build-on" ideas suggest more complicated tricks which build on each new skill. No special tools (such as clickers) or knowledge of specific training methods are required. Trick training is a great way to bond with your dog and help him integrate into your family. It keeps him mentally and physically challenged and helps to establish paths of communication between you. Many tricks build skills needed for common dog sports, dog dancing, and dog therapy work. It's every dog lover's privilege that Kyra and Chalcy took time from their performing schedule to share their secrets in 101 Dog Tricks.

Our family is probably in the high end of intermediate when it comes to training. We train the basics daily, participate in agility, and have done some scent work and carting. We're comfortable with targeting and shaping and like to do trick training for fun.

From our perspective, this book is useful because it illustrates so many trick ideas. I agree with another reviewer who mentioned that the instructions are not detailed. Some tricks include lots of instruction and others have very little. If you need guidance in training, that's a problem. If you're looking for a few new trick ideas, however, this book still works.

There are a few things about the layout I really like. One is the box that includes the hand/foot and verbal cues for the trick. Brilliant. It's a lot easier to understand a what a hand signal looks like when you have a picture rather than a paragraph of description. The classification by difficulty is also I nice touch. It won't hold true for every dog, but it's a good starting point. how to train a stubborn dog

I find Kyra to be incredibly annoying, even in still pictures. I cannot say why, but something about her gets to me. Even so, I was able to make it through this book and get a few things out of it.

Cesar's Rules: Your Way to Train a Well-Behaved Dog

The training book you’ve been waiting for from the bestselling author and star of National Geographic Channel’s Dog Whisperer

Your dog just doesn’t seem to listen. You’ve been through obedience training, but he still can’t seem to master the most basic commands. And nothing you do seems to prevent him from misbehaving. “Clients usually come to me when their dogs are ruining their lives, not when they won’t sit,” says Cesar. “But everywhere I go, people are telling me they are confused about the wide variety of training options and theories out there, and they feel paralyzed because they don’t know which to choose.”
Now, in his usual straightforward, confident manner, Cesar takes on the topic of training for the first time, by explaining the importance of balance as the foundation for a healthy relationship between you and your dog. In order to provide a variety of training options, he calls upon some of the foremost experts in the field to offer their advice so that you can find the perfect approach that works for you and your dog through a variety of methods.

Cesar is a phenominal dog trainer, but more importantly he is relationship oriented to dogs and people. Don't expect your typical do-this and then-that kind of dog training book (which btw, have never been successful for me). I can relate to him better than I can those other types of trainers, for this very reason. He is developing a bond first, the respect that then follows naturally is where the discipline and 'training' flow from. Then if there are any 'tricks' or specific techiques( read 'tools')needed, he brings them into play as necessary. how to train a stubborn dog

It never did make sense to me that to train my dog I would have to purchase expensive training tools in order to get the job done; I did and 'they' did nothing to enhance my efforts. From Cesar I have learned why my pets from childhood on did not obey me or take direction. Worse, they were confused by me. I see that as I have developed as a person of consistence, calm confidence and self-respect, first; my animal family members have quite naturally responded with very little 'training' needed. Expect to hear him repeat this message; most people are slow to grasp this becasue it is about them, not the dog. Not to deviate, but try training a horse before you understand and possess a strong, calm sense of leadership. Buy the book and his other materials and watch him work with his clients; if you are open to it, you will not only have better behaved companion dog, but you will be a more confident and balanced human.

Train Your Dog - The Positive Gentle Method

This organized and well produced DVD made it very easy to get the tips necessary to train my dog. Each command is on a separate chapter which makes it wonderfully easy to review the training tip that I was interested in.

I enjoyed the wide varitey of dogs used in this DVD. Interesting tips were used for both large and small dogs. (I don't have a short legged dog, but was fascinated that this was covered in the section on "down".)

My dog loved Nicole's voice, and watches the speakers intently when she praises the dogs.
This DVD is great; practical and fun to watch.

At first I thought the DVD was a little silly since it is filmed at someone's home. It is 100% positive training with treats and almost no corrections, completely different than any dog obedience class I've ever taken. BUT, once I got past the initial surprise, I realized how happy and excited the dogs were to work on obedience.
My biggest beef with obedience class is how utterly useless it seems to walk around in circles with your dog on a leash at home while practicing heel. My dog gets totally bored woking with discipline training, and so do I. It seems to only work when the leash is on because the dog learns that he would rather be anywhere than doing obedience with you.

This video gave me tons of ideas of ways to train my dog in a fun way using 5 minutes here and there. I had run out of ideas of things to teach my dog after sit, down, stay, and this DVD gave me more ideas like Leave it, Give, wait, and others. Yes, this is basic obedience, but useful stuff that will make your dog a wonderful part of the family, which is most people's goal. And best of all your dog will love it. He will look forward to pleasing you and getting his reward. I wish I had started this the day I got my puppy.

I was worried about using treats to train with until I read an article that said, "How would you like it if you were only told when you were doing something wrong everyday at work and never got a paycheck for it?" It really makes sense that a dog must be rewarded for good behavior and they must be engaged with something more interesting than the outside world. A dog should learn that you are the giver of all things good and being with you is better than chasing cars or barking at neighbor dogs. Discipline training just doesn't give a dog this kind of incentive, and it seems so boring for both trainer and dog.

I guess this style may not work for all dogs, but it seems to fit our dog perfectly. He is always excited to please me now by trying really hard to learn what I'm asking. That makes it rewarding for both of us. I'm having lots more fun training and getting better results than ever before. You can read all the same stuff in books, but it is nice to see it done if you are a visual learner like me. how to train a stubborn dog

The one positive thing I will say about dog obedience class is it is great for socialization around other dogs. Dogs really need this from a very young age. Socialization will not happen in the privacy of your own home so you will need to practice with your dog while at a dog park or around other dogs.

A dog who isn't properly socialized and has anxiety while in public or around other dogs doesn't care how good your treat is. While you do obedience remember to get out and socialize too.

On Talking Terms With Dogs: Calming Signals

I have always hoped that the inner thought pattern of dogs was somehow 'governed' in the way a human's is. I had always kept a candle burning for the notion that dogs interacted, communicated and socially bonded in a self-aware and considerate manner, rather than the crazed and often unintelligible behavioral garble we are left to observe in our domesticated companions. But, as a confirmed skeptic who had faced down many an erroneous and self-serving theory about animals forced on the public by nut-jobs who hoped "Fluffy could read minds", I had my doubts about this book. I bought it because it was the book chosen by my monthly book club for behavior dorks.

I was astounded, and frankly my training style will never be the same. This book has, with excellent concrete examples and full-color photos, taught me that dogs have an intricate and reliable body language that they use as effectively as we use words. It has raised my esteem for dogs as beings, enlightened my behavior around them, expectations of them and abilities as a trainer. I can hardly believe I interacted with dogs without knowing these principles. how to train a stubborn dog

Turid Rugaas, the author, speaks in such an easy manner with her topic that it is clear how well she understands it. The book is concise, short and manageable. There are full color photos on nearly every page, depicting dogs engaged in the precise behavior patterns she is discussing (so you'll be able to start recognizing them in your own pups right away). It surprised me how things she described correlated with some of my own memories of doggie interactions. She even unraveled a few mysteries for me; for instance, does your dog seem happy for you to stand in front of him, looking down at him, but get nervous as soon as you crouch to his level? There's a social reason for that. Does your dog sit with his back to you? He's not being impudent; he's trying to reassure you. Seeing how dogs use these techniques with other dogs (and how those others respond in kind) is the enlightening selling point of this book. She never makes an unfounded claim, and has years of experience and success to back herself up. Skeptics rejoice!

It's startling how thoughtful a dog's behavior really is. It won't even take a day's worth of your time to finish this book, but learning about a dog's calming signals, stress signals, threat signals and how to employ them yourself to calm and communicate with your own buddy will be worth a lifetime. Turid gives humans the gift of a language dogs already communicate with. It's like a Babel Fish for you and your hound.

Petsafe Rfa-67d 6-Volt Batteries, Set of Four (4)

This is the 2nd time that I have purchased batteries for my dogs' Petsafe collars from this dealer. I was very satisfied with the service that I received the 1st time and was not disappointed at all with my 2nd order.  how to train a stubborn dog

I use to purchase them from pet shops but found that this dealer has the best deal.

As far as I know, these are the only batteries that will work with the Petsafe collars. I remove the batteries from the collars when the dogs are back inside to prolong the life of the batteries.

New Gen Groovypets Rechargeable Remote Control Training Shock Collar with Separate Shock and Vibration Corrections for 2 Small,Medium, and Large Dogs-ONLY from Groovypets!

I love the Groovypets training color for 2 dogs. I bought it for my 10 month old Saint Bernard who is 100 pounds and my hyper lab/shar pei how is 65 pounds. My lab would run the fence and bark at everyone who passed by franticly and she was teaching the pup to do it too.

I put a collar on each and the first time they barked at people walking I hit the vibrate both dogs function and instant quite! I can vibrate one or both; I have labeled the controller so I know which side is black and red, but that's the only thing I had to correct. how to train a stubborn dog

My dogs went from aggressive barkers to just watching as people walk by. The vibration is very effective, I hardly have had to shock either dog and I have had it for about 2 months. It stays charged for 2 or more days. I wish I had bought this sooner.

The price is great and it works both on my long haired dog and my short hair one. Totally satisfied!
